Staff Q&A Sunday – 8/19/12

Another edition of the knowledge of staff thread is here. I think it's important to know about your staff; how it thinks, how it works, how it moves, and how to use your staff properly. This is why Staff Q&A is important. Again, feel free to ask your staff some questions and we'll try to answer your questions in one of the future Staff Q&A Sunday threads. Time to get started!

#1. Since it's almost September, judging by their performance, who should be called up for the 40 man roster?

Andrew

Realistically, get prepared for Dickerson. I hope they think about calling up Zoilo Almonte and Mark Montgomery though. They've done very well at AA.

Tanya

Chris Dickerson is probably the most obvious choice. Cory Wade is doing pretty well in AAA and will likely get the call too.

Mark

Dellin Betances, in case we again need to punt a few games to the Rays at the end of the season.

Rob

Anybody but Betances.

Matt

Launch someone out of a cannon and add Mark Montgomery. He's the only one I can see adding anything or actually playing. Maybe Nunez as a pinch runner/scapegoat.

Greg

ZOILO!!! Well I'm at least hoping to see him. Plus, our game threads could use a bit more Cockerson!

#2. Besides the already announced expanded replay system Selig is testing out, how much further do you think they should go?

Andrew

I would be completely fine with a purely automated system. Robot umps would get the calls right and keep the strike zone consistent anyway. Keep one ump at the game for judgment calls.

Tanya

Do what it takes to get the calls right. Fair/foul, safe/out, catch/trap should all be monitored. I'd love a better way of ensuring balls and strikes, but there really isn't one right now. Maybe someday.

Mark

I think that they should go all the way with instant replay. And then I think that they should promise to take instant replay out for a lobster dinner and then never call back

Rob

Any umpire who has a call reversed due to replay should be subjected to some form of on field humiliation as punishment for screwing up. This would enhance the overall entertainment experience when watching a game.

Matt

Start reviewing balks. Review the tapes and put an iso-cam on Pettitte as the case study. Rescind stats as needed.

Greg

Safe & Out calls on the bases and at the plate are important as well. I say make the bases/plate glow green when safe and red when out. It's like Laser Pucks, just slightly stupider!

#3. What's your favorite Girl Scout Cookie? Also, what's your favorite regular standard store brand cookie?

Andrew

Samoas. Is that P.C.? Don't care. That's my answer for both.

Tanya

Thin Mints with Samoas a close second. Favorite store brand is probably Pepperidge Farm Oatmeal Raisin.

Mark

Thin mints.

Rob

Girls Scout: Thin Mints
Store: Oreos

Matt

Thin Mints. You're free to disagree, but you're stupid and wrong if you do. Keebler Soft Batch in the store. Same principles apply.

Greg

Thin Mints. Goddamn things are like crack. Pepperidge Farm Geneva's and Oreos are tied for Store Brand, waging cookie war against one another.

#4. What's your favorite type of pasta? Not pasta dish, but just the pasta itself! I have to be clear with YOU people!

Andrew

Tortellini is quite good, but I love all kinds of pasta.

Tanya

Bowtie pasta is the best pasta.

Mark

Robertdowneyjr-tropicthunder_medium

Rob

Hand made fresh fettuccine

Matt

Giving a pass to the casual racism, I'll say rotini. It looks like a slide.

Greg

Spaghetti with Penne being a very close second.

Game 121 Lineup: Red Sox vs. Yankees

Lineup vs. Red Sox:

Derek Jeter SS
Nick Swisher 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Curtis Granderson CF
Eric Chavez 3B
Raul Ibanez LF
Russell Martin C
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Casey McGhee DH

Pregame Notes:

– Here’s a question I was asking to some of my Twitter followers and I figured to add a poll to tonight’s lineup. Tonight’s poll circulates around–Nick Swisher.

Week 17 Yankees Player of the Week

The Yankees had yet another solid week going 4-3. They played very well against the two time defending AL champion Texas Rangers by winning the first three games of the series before dropping the 4th one. The Yankees followed that up by splitting the first two games with Boston. The Yankees managed to do this with a short handed lineup missing Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira at times during the week. The Week 17 Yankees Player of the Week Nominations are David Phelps, Nick Swisher, Hiroki Kuroda, and Derek Jeter.

The Case For Phelps: Phelps did a very admirable job of filling in for CC Sabathia for this week. Against two very tough lineups and on a pitch count both starts Phelps flourished. Phleps pitched beautifully yesterday despite picking up the loss. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and sturck out 7. Two of the three runs were on a well placed pitched pitch on the outside corner to Adrian Gonzalez. Phelps beat Texas by pitching 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, and striking out 3.

The Case For Swisher: Swisher probably had the best week at the plate that anyone on the Yankees have had this season. Swisher hit .414 on the week, with 4 HR’s and 12 RBI. Swisher started it off on Monday with a grand slam against Ryan Dempster to give the Yankees a lead that they would never relinquish. The next day, Swisher hit a 2 run home run against Alexi Ogando in the 7th inning to give break the 0-0 score. Then on Friday Swisher hit a home run from each side of the plate vs. Boston.

The Case for Kuroda: I was in attendance on Tuesday in the Bronx when Kuroda pitched the best game any Yankee has this season. Kuroda took a no-hitter into the 7th before Elvis Andrus broke it up with an infield single. He ended up pitching a complete game shutout and allowed only two hits. Kuroda only allowed 4 balls out of the infield and just one runner past 1st base. He did all this against what is perhaps the bets hitting team in baseball.

The Case for Jeter: Jeter continued his fantastic season by hitting .357, with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI on the week. Jeter’s two home runs this week gave him double digits for the season and he had three multi hit games on the week.

You have a hitter doing as well as he possibly could against a pitcher doing the best he possibly could. I will have to give it to Swisher because he was a huge part in three of the four wins this week. All 4 candidates are strong this week so vote in the poll and discuss in the comments.

Morning Bits: Girardi, Mattingly, Cone, O’Neill, Ichiro

Good morning everyone and a Happy Sunday to you all. Yankees and Red Sox play the rubber game of the 3 game series tonight at 8pm on ESPN. Josh Beckett hits the mound for the Red Sox and Hiroki Kuroda hits the mound for the Yankees. Here are your morning bits!

– ESPN New York wonders who would be the better manager for the Yankees: Joe Girardi (or as they like to nickname him Joey Looseleaf) or Don Mattingly (Donnie Baseball)?

– The New York Daily News writes how the YES Network should trim the roster of analysts–but they should keep David Cone and Paul O’Neill with Michael Kay full-time.

– The Yankees get to see first hand what makes Ichiro Suzuki one of the most prolific hitters in baseball–and I must say, his ‘slap and run’ technique is very impressive.
